THE RIGHT TO EDUCATION

Education is an essential right of the Declaration of human rights, which is a document , proclaimed, by the UN general Assembly, in Paris in 1948.  It lists 30 articles, which represent inalienable and universal rights; among them, there is the right to education, itisexplained in the article 26 of the UDHR; to put it briefly, it states that:

  • Everyone has the right to education; it must be free, at least for the elementary stage;
  • Education must be directed to the full development of the human personality;
  • Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that must be given to their children.

Education is necessary to live well in the society,  it makes us free and able to make good decisions, but especially it helps us to THINK.

Moreover the article 26 is one of the key goals of  Agenda 2030, adopted by the UN in 2015. In the SDG it represents the 4th goal and it has 6 targets, which are linked to the other goals, so it’s a milestone right , to achieve all the objectives in the Agenda within 2030.  Therefore there are several things to do in order to ensure a good education for everyone and everywhere; for instance many countries and many association (like “Save the Children”), are working hard  to build new schools, to hire teachers, to promote culture. But the first step to achieve this goal, is  to put article 26 into practice; because in the world there are millions of children and also adults, who are deprived of educational opportunities.

However, this right is often violated. Over time young people have been protesting a lot for the right to education and civil ones. One of the greatest example is MALALA YOUSAFZAI. She is a Pakistani activist and the youngest Nobel prize winner. She became popular because she has been fighting for her education and for all the girls in Muslims countries, who are excluded from school and society. She risked his life, though. In fact in 2012 she was shot on her head by a Taliban, while she was going to school. The following year, she had the courage to give a speech during the youth assembly of the United Nation in New York. There, she explained that books and pens are the most powerful weapons, which we can use to make the world a better place for everyone.

So, we have to be grateful to go to school every day and consider ourselves extremely lucky. Education accompanies any person in his growth, in his becoming aware of his rights and duties. Education is synonym of civilization.
