Vasco Rossi: an evergreen rockstar

Vasco Rossi was born in 1952. The name Vasco was given to him by his father in memory of one of his prison mates in Germany during the Second World War. His mother convinced him to take singing lessons. Then he was enrolled in the Institute of the Salesians “San Giuseppe” in Modena and after having fled several times, he was transferred to the Tanari Technical Commercial Institute in Bologna. He graduated in accounting and enrolled in the degree course in Economics and Commerce at the University of Bologna, despite his dream was to attend the DAMS. (University of art, music and entertainment).

He began his career in 1977 and since then he has released 34 albums, of which 18 in the studio, 11 live, 5 official collections, as well as  two EPs and an audiovisual work; in total he has written 191 songs in addition to having written numerous texts and music for other performers.

Vasco Rossi’s first concert took place in the main hall of the Corni Institute in Modena in 1977 and since then he has done about thirty tours, and each of these tours includes dozens of dates and seems to have no intention of stopping. On July 1, 2017 Vasco Rossi took the stage in Modena Park putting on a concert that has made history.

But what is the secret of his success? His instagram profile has more than one and a half million followers. Le’s dig deeper into the strange phenomena that is Vasco-mania.

Vasco is an icon that manifests a particular way of life. As a pioneer of rock in Italy, critics have long been linking him with the rock-god scandal triad: sex, drugs, and rock and roll. In that sense, he and his lyrics embody the archetype of a rockstar.

Vasco was a ‘prophet’ for youngsters that grew disillusioned during the 1980s and 1990s. Songs like Una Vita Spericolata (A Reckless Life), Vado Al Massimo (I Go To The Max), and Siamo Solo Noi (We Are The Only Ones) expressed the feelings of rage, disillusionment and disappointment that pervaded the lives of many Italians that felt oppressed by rules imposed on them by society.

After a career spanning over 40 years, Vasco Rossi is still an iconic figure and one of the most popular singers in Italy even today.
