The month of May for cycling enthusiasts is that of rebirth.

The Tour of Italy is a men’s cycling race in stages that is usually held in the first three weeks of May. Although organized in Italy, the event is attended by sportsmen of all nationalities. For this reason the Tour is considered one of the three great European stage races together with the Tour de France and the Spanish Vuelta and was established in 1909 on the idea of journalists Tullo Morgagni, Eugenio Camillo Costamagna and Armando Cougnet. Today it is included by the International Cycling Union in the professional circuit in the World Tour.

The route of the race varies from year to year and crosses most of the Boot, between climbs and flat stretches. Sometimes the route also borders other countries for promotional purposes or special occasions. Usually the last stage is held in Milan, but this is not an absolute rule. Once the race included 8 stages and 2,448 kilometres. The first historic winner was Luigi Ganna, who won the prize money of 5,250 lire. Since then the Tour has always run, except for the tragic parentheses of the two world wars. Over the decades, the Tour of Italy has given rise to epic feats and legendary rivalries such as the dualism between Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali, two of the most important Italian athletes who, between the 1930s and 1950s, competed for the national and international record on bicycles. That of 2022 is a historic edition of the Tour of Italy of cycling: the number 150.

The Tour of Italy 2022 starts from Hungary and from the immediate vicinity of Budapest on Friday 6th May and after the first three stages, it will arrive in Sicily with the first ascent of Mount Etna, going up towards Naples and the beautiful Procida, Abruzzo, Marche, the Emilia-Romagna and Liguria before the Alps, until the arrival of 29th May in Verona, for a total of 3445 kilometers, 50,580 meters of altitude difference and 21 stages interspersed with 3 days of rest: 8 stages for sprinters or for passers-by sprinters, 9 mountain tapponi of which 3 with first category uphill arrivals, and two with arrival on second category GPM, 2 time trial and two other stages very very suitable for fugitives. Yesterday with Vincenzo Albanese, third and first of the humans behind the super Biniam Girmay and Mathieu van der Poel, the first positive signs came for a “Bel Paese” that was struggling at the Tour of Italy 2022. Today, however, not with little surprise, the big hit arrived: the first Italian win in Reggio Emilia. Exceptional sprint of Alberto Dainese that gives hope in key tricolour especially in key sprinters, where for several years we can no longer find a sprinter among the best in the world. The qualities and talent are not lacking to the 24-year-old DSM who in the past had shown, in the flat fractions, to be at the level of the top sprinters. So it is not all black for tricolour cycling, as it could appear after the first week of the Pink Race. To dream, in a future key, there is also the project initiated by Davide Cassani: the former coach of the national team is in fact ready to return to the group, with his own team.  He told Corriere: “I face hectic days with the enthusiasm of a boy. The project is being completed: it is the most beautiful and ambitious challenge of my life. Don’t ask me names and roles. But I know that if I put myself in the game is to get serious” We talk about a Professional with a historic partner like Bianchi and most Italian riders. Everything should be ready for the month of June and should leave for the next season.
