The observatory in Lipari island is the most panoramic place on the whole island. The Geophysical Observatory of Lipari is located in the southern part of the island on a square located on Monte Guardia. This strategic position makes it a real window on the Aeolian wonders: it is in fact possible to admire the island of Vulcano, as well as the cliff below which drops sheer into the sea.
The two wildest sisters, Alicudi and Filicudi, will then appear in the distance, and by slightly changing perspective Stromboli will also show itself in all its magnificence. you have a 360 degree view of five of the seven Aeolian Islands. to reach this wonderful place you need a car or scooter as it is far from the center but when the days are nice many tourists decide to do this route on foot.
In the acquisition room of the Lipari Observatory, constant monitoring of the Aeolian archipelago takes place, aimed at seismic and volcanic surveillance.
The Geophysical Observatory of Lipari is one of the branches of the Catania Section of the Institute
National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). It was created in 1967 initially to monitor seismic phenomena and the activity of the Great Crater of Vulcano. Over the years, the headquarters has been equipped with cutting-edge technology and today ensures, 24 hours a day, seismic and volcanic surveillance of Etna and the Aeolian volcanoes.
