The Statue of Liberty is famous around the world. It is in New York harbor and it was a gift to America from France as a symbol of international friendship. August Bartholdi was commissioned to design the statue in 1875 and it was completed around 10 years later, in 1884. The Statue was transported in 350 pieces. Americans built the pedestal and it was celebrated with bands, parades and fireworks.
The Statue represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of Liberty and in the statue there are several symbols of freedom: the crown, the stone tablet with the date of American Declaration of Independence, the torch and the broken chain.
For Americans it represented the idea freedom that America was built on, for immigrants it was their first sight of their new country.
The Lady Liberty is a colossus of copper, steel and granite. It is 46 m. high, excluding the pedestal, and weighs 225 tons. It has a waist size of 35 m and the feet measure 7,6 m. The inner structure was made by Eiffel in steel, while Bartholdi used over 300 copper sheets for the cladding. Its original color was that of a penny, but over time, due to the oxidation, it has become green.
It is said that to sculpt the features of the Statue of Liberty’s face Bartholdi was inspired by those of his mother Charlotte.
The Statue of Liberty is a famous tourist attraction and a lot of tourists visit it every year.
It has always been a symbol of hope and welcome to those who seek a new life in America.
