The exploration of Mars is an important part of the space exploration missions of the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation, the United States, Europe and India. Since the 1960s, dozens of unmanned automatic probes, including orbiters, landers and rovers, have been sent to Mars to collect data and answer questions about the red planet and its past Earth.
Computers generated images of one of the two Martian exploration rovers that landed on the planet in 2004.
The exploration of Mars has reached considerable financial costs with an amount of failed missions of about two thirds of the total missions, due to the large number of factors that can adversely affect the success of the mission.
