The “Colombaia” castle is also called “ Peliade Tower”. It is a medieval fortress of very ancient origins, located on a small island in the western end of the port of Trapani. The “Colombaia” Castle is probably the oldest and the best known symbol of Trapani. The castle was built around 260 BC during the first Punic war. The tower is 32 meters high and it is made up of four floors. The structure is very large and it has an octagonal shape. Nowadays, the island where the castle stands is completely abandoned and the main building is unsafe. The castle has a quay in front of the building. It was used as a prison until 1965, when the new prison in Trapani was inaugurated. Then, it fell into a state of neglect. Today, the “Colombaia” is reborn and it is possible to visit the interior spaces.
