Sergiy Stakhovsky was in Dubai on vacation when he received the terrible phone call from his parents.
They told him that Russia had invaded Ukraine and that they could hear the bombs from their home in the capital Kiev.
Stakhovsky could not sleep for three days he could not believe the images circulating on social media.
After bringing his wife and children back to Hungary, where they live, he decided to leave for Ukraine and left the house in silence so as not to worry her children. The sportsman said: “I actually sneaked out. The kids read and watched cartoons, so I didn’t bother them. The only one who saw me leaving was the youngest and he asked me, ‘Dad where are you going?’ I had my backpack on and so I said, ‘I’ll be right back.’ “
In reality Stakhovsky did not turn back, heading first to Bratislava in Slovakia to pick up some gear including bulletproof vests and helmets before driving to the border where he saw a horrible landscape from which many people were fleeing, leaving everything and carrying only a bag.
