Medicane: an increasingly frequent nightmare

In meteorology, the Mediterranean tropical cyclone (also called medicane) is a low-pressure system characterized by a warm core, torrential rains, strong winds, which typically appears in the Mediterranean basin area.

Their origin, like that of tropical hurricanes, is to be found in the excess of thermal energy accumulated above the sea (in this case the Mediterranean Sea). This energy is rapidly transformed into kinetic energy, that is, into an intense swirling motion of the air.

The wave of bad weather that hit eastern Sicily in the last week of October 2021 was nothing short of exceptional. The cyclone, in addition to extensive damage, unfortunately also caused three victims. In the provinces affected by bad weather, people looked with apprehension at the sky that promised pouring rain and they followed the weather forecast more than usual. In those days in Catania they also stocked up on food, the shelves of various supermarkets, taken by storm, remained empty. The city was literally barricaded in anticipation of the Medicane. Few people on the street and shops, schools and public offices closed. It seemed to be bakc to the lockdown. There were only sandbags of lava ash, cardboard, and wooden boards placed to protect entrances and windows, every time I looked at the black sky above me I felt like I was living a nightmare.

Due to climate change, these extreme weather events will be increasingly frequent.

We must necessarily do something for our planet and become aware of what is happening, there is no more time, we must act immediately, even with small daily gestures we can do a lot.
