HOMOPHOBIC=HOMOIGNORANT

Homosexuality maybe considered a sexual orientation that involves emotional, romantic and / or sexual attraction towards individuals of the same sex. This is not always a choice, so it cannot always be changed. Sexual orientation is the result of the iteration of biological, genetic, environmental and cultural factors.

WHAT IS HOMOPHOBIA, then? It is the fear of and the prejudice against people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or trasgender. Some people who do not know anything about homosexuality consider it as something wrong: they think it is something too different and weird to understand, a disease or a sin, an immoral thing, a mental illness and often  not only elderly bighottos, but even young people, adolescents and teenagers aged 13 to 19 think so. Some of the causes of homophobia are: religion, repressed desires, cultural and institutional factors.

In order to declare themselves for what they are and publicly display their identities, a lot of LGBT people (LGBT is an acronym that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) still carry high risks, such as job loss, family expulsion, marginalization, and for these reasons they can also be victims of blackmail and threats.

In our country, Italy,  we are doing a lot, but unfortunately  there is still so much to do for gender equality and to stand up for  the fight against homophobia, prejudice and intolerance. For this reason, it is hoped that the government will be able to make a serious law against homophobia, which will eventually consider it as a crime and give concrete support to the victims such as shelters and anti-violence centers to make complaints possible.

Never forget that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”
