A BRIEF HISTORY
The 70s was a very important decade for modern music, that saw the birth of numerous groups (some already famous in the 60s) that will influence future groups in the decades to come. The early 1970s saw the birth of numerous rock derivative genres (soft rock, pop rock, hard rock), with internationally renowned artists. One of the most famous bands of this decade are Queen, formed in 1971 in London by Freddie Mercury with Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. The band has sold around 300 million records worldwide and released 15 studio and 9 live albums. Queen were influenced by very different musical genres, such as heavy metal, gospel, blues rock, electronic music, funk and psychedelic rock. Mercury’s death on November 24th, 1991, and Deacon’s retirement in 1997 ended the band’s musical production.
This period is characterized by lightness and ‘committed’ music, but also by a great innovation, in fact a tangle of contemporary musical genres developed. Pop, which reached one of its highest levels making the repertoires of other genres a little lighter with singers like Michael Jackson, who released Thriller in 1983, which will subsequently become the best-selling album of history, Prince and Duran Duran; in the rock genre we have Guns N ‘Roses with Sweet Child O’ Mine, Metallica and the return of Deep Purple, while Ozzy Osbourne begins his solo career after singing with Black Sabbath. Then there is post-punk, the main exponent was David Bowie, but also Madonna, a singer defined by some as “Pop”.
The 90s are characterized by genres such as pop, grunge, metal, britpop, electronic, techno, house and above all, dance music that is listened to all over the world. One of the most famous bands of this decade are Nirvana. Nirvana are the most representative group of the grunge movement and were formed in Aberdeen in 1987 by Kurt Cobain. The band has sold around 75 million records and released 3 studio albums and 3 live albums. Nirvana were influenced by different genres of the past, in particular by punk and noise-rock, especially for speed and immediacy, and also by hard-rock for the heaviness and hardness of certain sounds. On April 5th, 1994 Kurt Cobain committed suicide at the age of 27 and on April 8th he was found dead at his Seattle home with a gunshot wound to the head and Nirvana disbanded immediately.
In the 2000s we witness the collapse of teen pop, whose main exponent was Britney Spears, the success of R&B, thanks to artists such as Beyoncé and Alicia Keys continues, while the success of house music is recorded. The metal genre becomes famous with Linkin Park and the success of the Red Hot Chili Peppers continues. In 2000 rap returns in vogue, driven by artists such as Eminem. Committed rock evolves and finds great performers such as Muse, Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Foo Fighters and Radiohead. Other popular artists of the pop punk scene are Green Day, while indie rock is spreading in Europe with bands such as White Stripes and Arctic Monkeys. The soul pop genre with a Sixties atmosphere is back in fashion thanks to the great international success of Amy Winehouse, who inspired other singers, such as Adele, Lana Del Rey and Lady Gaga.
In the years from 2010 to 2019 in the field of music the genre of American Latin was successful; reggaeton explodes all over the world, reaching its climax with Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, that became one of the best-selling singles in the history of music with over 6 billion of views on Youtube . Thanks to some rappers the trap music comes, which sees strong influences of elettronic music and more pop influences.
Musical genres, like pop, rock, folk, electronic and rap, are increasingly mixed and new trends are emerging in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
The most famous genre in the last years has been hip hop with its derivations (urban, dubstep, trap). Also popular is Korean-pop or K-pop with Blackpink whose components are Jennie, Rosé, Lisa e Jisoo: who in a few hours reached a great number of views on Youtube with the song “How You Like That” once again earning the title of queens of K-pop.
