Connecting people: Facebook

Facebook is a US social media and social network, created on February 4, 2004 as a free university service and later expanded for commercial purposes. It is based on a web 2.0 platform written in various programming languages. It is available in over 100 languages (in Italian since May 14, 2008); in June 2017, it reached 2.23 billion monthly active users, and was ranked as the number one social networking service by number of active users.
The name “Facebook” is inspired by a list with names and photographs of students, which some US universities distribute at the beginning of the academic year to help members socialize with each other.
The site, founded at Harvard University in the United States, by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, was originally designed exclusively for students, but was soon opened to students from other schools. Later it was also open to high school students, and then to anyone who claimed to be over 13 years of age, achieving enormous global success and profoundly changing many aspects related to socialization and interaction of individuals: according to Alexa, a company that deals with Internet traffic statistics, Facebook is the third most visited site in the world after Google and YouTube.

The story of Facebook starts on October 28, 2003 when the 19-year-old Mark Zuckerberg created Facemash, a website, predecessor of Facebook, available on the Internet while in his sophomore year at Harvard University. He copied photos of students at the university and posted them on the Internet. He was accused of violating privacy and risked being expelled from the university. In the end, none of this happened but his site was deleted. Zuckenberg didn’t give up and created the site we know today.

Today Facebook is one of the most used sites in the world. It is not only used by young people but also by people of different ages. It is also used to make new friends and activate new chats with people who also know each other. I love Facebook. I often use it and I enjoy communicating with other people and making friends, post photos and also some stories I like very much
