CHRIST CHURCH COLLEGE AS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION.

Christ Church College is the largest college in the city of Oxford. It is also popular for being the setting for some scenes in the Harry Potter saga. “It is a series of fantasy novels written by J. K. Rowling. The saga centres on the adventures of the young wizard Harry Potter and his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The story is mainly set in the fictional wizarding world. The narrative arc mainly follows the confrontation between the young protagonist and the dark wizard Lord Voldemort, who wants to conquer the magical world and achieve immortality. In the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the students of the school of magic are seen climbing the stone staircase leading to the Great Hall. And it was Oxford’s Great Hall, the dining room, that inspired the writer to set some of the scenes…

If, like me, you love Harry and his magical world, you will be enchanted by the long tables, the stone fireplace, the portraits along the walls and the stained glass windows. Also within the courtyard is Christ Church Cathedral, which has two special features. It holds the record for being the smallest cathedral in the UK and also serves as the college chapel, making it unique in the world. Lewis Carroll, the pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, the English mathematician and writer who created the wonderful story of Alice in Wonderland, is one of the famous people who have studied here.

It was at Christ College that the writer met Alice Lidell and her sisters, the rector’s daughters and a source of inspiration for the creation of his stories. In fact, inside the courtyard you can see a small door, where you can expect to see the White Rabbit at any time. Near the entrance to the college there is the Alice Shop, a friendly little shop that sells many items related to the story.
