8th MARCH: WOMEN’S DAY AND ITS ORIGINS.

MARCH 8 IS WOMEN’S DAY, IT IS A  DATE TO REMEMBER  THE SOCIAL , ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL STRUGGLES MADE BY WOMEN.  TODAY ALL WOMEN CAN WEAR PANTS, VOTE, WORK AND BE INDEPENDENT THANKS TO THE REBELLIONS THAT WOMEN OF THE PAST HAVE CARRIED OUT . THIS DAY IS LINKED TO 1911 WHEN A GROUP OF WORKERS FROM A NEW YORK TEXTILE INDUSTRY HAD BEEN ON STRIKE FOR DAYS AGAINST THE TERRIBLE CONDITIONS IN WHICH THEY FOUND THEMSELVES WORKING. THEY PROTESTED AGAINST OWNERS OF THAT INDUSTRY WHO HAD BLOCKED THE EXITS OF THE FACTORY. AFTER A  WHILE A FIRE BROKE OUT AND 134 WORKERS DIED . AMONG THEM THERE WERE LOTS OF  IMMIGRANTS AND EVEN ITALIAN PEOPLE. LATER THEY PROTESTED TO IMPROVE THEIR WORKING CONDITIONS.

ANOTHER HISTORICAL EVENT WAS DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR , THE FEBRUARY REVOLUTION IN RUSSIA ,  ON MARCH 8, 1917 : WOMEN PROTESTED AGAINST THE TSAR, CLAIMING THEIR RIGHTS AND FREEDOM. BUT EVEN EARLIER IN 1909 THE AMERICAN SOCIALIST PARTY WAS THE FIRST TO THINK OF DEDICATING A DATE TO WOMEN AND IN 1921 THIS INTERNATIONAL DATE WAS CHOSEN.

THE MIMOSA WAS CHOSEN AS A SYMBOL OF THIS DATE IN 1946, AN IDEA PROPOSED BY THE PARLIAMENTARY COMMUNIST TERESA MATTEI. THE MIMOSA SYMBOLIZES FEMININITY , STRENGTH . WE MUST NOT  FORGET THOSE WORKERS’ SACRIFICE,  AND WE WILL ALWAYS RESPECT  WOMEN BECAUSE THEY ARE  UNIQUE!
