The European day of languages was celebrated for the first time on the European day of languages in 2001. At the end of this campaign, the Committee of ministers decided to celebrate the GEL on the 26th of September each year. On this occasion million of people in all member states of the Council of Europe, but also in other parts of Europe and of the world, organise or take part in activities aimed at promoting our linguistic diversity.
The general purpose of the day is to draw attention to the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe which must be maintained and improved. Its aim is to develop the multilingual competence and intercultural understanding.
There are 24 official languages and six other minority languages spoken by 40 million people in the European Union.
On that day , my class, 2D, organised a flash mob for Europe… Here’s the video I want to show you… In the video we say: we like languages , we love friends, all together we are fine!. It’s a hymn to friendship and to languages!
On the European day of languages we also explored the website: https://edl.ecml.at/. It’s a website full of activities, suggestions and competitions. On the website dedicated to the Day, there are many other possibilities to ‘play’ with languages: language travel, language challenges of the secret agent 2021 and the competition for the best design for the European Day of Languages t-shirt .
On the occasion of the European Day of Languages 2021, the Department for European Policies has added a new entry in the Euro word section, dedicated to terms or expressions in a foreign language used in Italy by Institutions and the media; the Euro Word for the 2021 Day is “Election day”.
Happy European day of languages!
