Born in Milan in 1977. In 2001 she began her career as a pilot of the aeronautical academy, reaching the rank of captain. In May 2009 she was selected by the European Space Agency (ESA), and after 5 years she becomes the first female astronaut of Italian nationality to perform a space flight. On 11 June 2015, after 199 days and a few hours on the International Space Station, the return to Earth took place in Kazakhstan. The first mission in which Cristoforetti takes part, lasting about 6-7 months, is called ISS Expedition 42/43 Futura and foresees, on 23 November 2014, the arrival of the International Space Station aboard a Sojuz vehicle; it is the first mission of an Italian woman in space and of the seventh Italian astronaut, preceded on the International Space Station (ISS) by Umberto Guidoni, Paolo Nespoli, Roberto Vittorini and Luca Parmitano. In the mission program there are experiments on human physiology, biological analyzes and 3D printing in weightlessness in order to also experiment the possibility of printing spare parts for the station itself without having to depend on shipments from the ground. Samantha Cristoforetti personally tests the innovative devices of the Drain Brain program developed by prof. Paolo Zamboni of the Vascular Diseases Center of the University of Ferrara on the gravitational diagnosis of cerebral venous return in telemedicine. Samantha is one of the great Italian pride, she is a woman who with commitment and determination has managed to crown what in the collective imagination is the profession of dreams: the astronaut.
