On January 27th ,1945, the Soviet troops with Marshal Ivan Konev, first arrived at the Polish city of Auschwitz, discovering the nearby concentration camp and freeing its survivors. The discovery of Auschwitz and the testimonies of the survivors revealed, for the first time in the world, the horror of nazism . In Auschwitz, about ten days earlier, the nazis had ruinously retreated bringing with them, on a death march, all the healthy prisoners, many of whom died during the march itself. The opening of the Auschwitz gates showed the whole world the witnesses to the tragedy and the instruments of torture and annihilation used in the nazi concentration camps.
The date of January 27th in memory of the Shoah, the extermination of Jewish people, is indicated as the official date to UN member states, as Remembrance day. We need to reflect on the importance of human values, such as peace, love and respect.there is a famous sentence we should read everyday: “the Holocaust is a page of the book of humanity from which we will never have to remove the bookmark of memory!”.
