The arrival of Porsche and Audi in Formula 1 starting in 2026 seemed to be just a formality and now all doubts have been swept away. A few days ago the CEO of the Volkswagen Group, Herbert Diess, announced that the two German brands will enter the world circus as engineers, although it is not yet clear – or rather, official – with which teams they will run. “Volkswagen is not entering Formula 1. It is not a suitable brand and will not participate,” the CEO of the Volkswagen Group immediately clarified. “Premium brands have decided to enter Formula 1 with our support. As far as Porsche is concerned, the project is already relatively concrete. This is not the same for Audi”. Since Liberty Media came to command the commercial rights to F1, the world champion Circus has expanded strongly into very important automotive markets, such as the United States. In terms of communication, social media and entertainment, an important role has been played by Netflix with the now famous “Drive to Survive” that has brought many young people to approach the queen series of motorsport on 4 wheels. Formula 1 is spreading extremely well around the world including the United States and Asia. In motorsport, it’s really only Formula 1 that matters.
I am happy about the addition of legendary teams like Porche and Audi to Formula 1. I am disappointed, however, that we will have to wait four years to see them. I’m also happy from a fan perspective, because more people will be able to follow F1 and there will be more drivers in races.
