LA VALLETTA

A SMALL CAPITAL, A GREATTREASURE

LA VALLETTA: the heart of Malta

Valletta is the capital of Malta, a small island in the heart of the Mediterranean. Despite its small size, it is a city rich in history, culture and architectural beauty that make it unique in the world.

It was founded in 1566 by the Knights of the Order of St. John and was built as a fortified city intended to defend the island from enemy invasions. Its name derives from Jean de Valletta, the Grand Master of the Knights who ordered its construction after the victory against the Ottoman Empire.

Walking through its narrow and orderly streets you can notice the characteristic colored balconies and among the most important monuments the Co-Cathedral of San Giovanni, which houses priceless artworks, including the famous painting by Caravaggio The Beheading of St. John the Baptist.

One of the most characteristic and fascinating events for tourists is the ceremony of the Salute of the Cannons in the Battery. Every day at 12:00 to 16:00 a cannon is fired a tradition that dates back to the times of the Knights of St. John and was used to mark the time to salute the ships entering the port. The cannons used are real historical cannons kept in perfect condition and the ceremony is conducted by figures in period uniform.

In conclusion, although small, Valletta is a city that with its ancient charm and modern spirit best represents the beauty of the Mediterranean.
