Kids and reading nowadays

In recent years, the percentage of young people and children who are passionate about reading in our country has fallen sharply, why? Experts believe that the reason for this is the increase in the number of children who prefer playing video games and being on social networks rather than reading a book. Other causes that emerged directly from the children are that reading is tiring and requires active behaviour, so children associate reading a book with fatigue. (The following percentages were taken from ‘https://www.liceoreginamargherita.edu.it/lo_strillone/2020/lettura_tra_i_giovani.html’)

In 2016, only 16% of high school boys reported reading a book or newspaper every day. Despite this in 2019, Istat data gives us a more comforting picture by describing that the age group of 11-14 year olds are among those who read the most, in this one girls read the most as well as in the 15-17 and 18-19 age group. Young people do not read but not because they think reading is something bad, reading is important, necessary for cognitive development and it is equally necessary to promote it starting with children and young people. There is now a need for re-education in reading, which must first of all start with the parents. In fact, there is a 90% probability that a child who grows up with both parents passionate about reading will be inclined to become an ‘avid’ reader, while those who grow up in a family that has never been interested in reading have a 36% probability. The message is mainly addressed to us young people who, through the written word, can retrace the exploits of women and men who have contributed to the social and cultural progress of mankind. Therefore, we young people should start paying more attention and importance to reading books as they are food for our mind in addition to the benefits it offers us, such as reducing stress, expanding our vocabulary and improving our memory and writing skills. Some of the books I have read offer playback in films and frankly, books are something else, they conveyed much more emotion to me, as well as the various details that cannot be included in films, these are also part of the reasons why I prefer reading.
