At Christmas, we are all better

During the Christmas holidays, we stay together with our relatives. The typical Christmas dish for us is “collorelle”: they are biscuits with a dough made with almonds inside.

It is traditional to play cards with friends and relatives to have fun and spend time together. Being Christians we celebrate the birth of Jesus and on the 24th at the stroke of midnight, we put the statue of the baby Jesus in the crib.

Everyone is better at Christmas, they say. In order not to let it remain just a cliché, you can take action, making a difference with gifts or gestures full of love, towards those who will receive them and towards those who need them most. From voluntary associations to environmental protection, there are many initiatives that you can choose from.

Among the categories most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, there are certainly the elderly. Many are alone in the Extended Care Units. To make their Christmas better, for example, many have joined the “Santa’s grandchildren” initiative, which consists of spending time with them and bringing them something chosen from their wish list, certainly affection is the most requested gift. In Agrigento, on the other hand, the municipal administration has taken the field to help the children who are part of families in financial difficulty, launching the “suspended gift” for the first time in the city. Concrete help has been designed for less fortunate children who risk not finding a toy under the tree on Christmas Day.

Many others have donated some of their time by organizing canteens for the homeless and giving them a hot meal in good company.

These are all splendid initiatives, but in our opinion they should be promoted all year round because the magic of extra attention or someone’s smile goes far beyond the Christmas period.
