A great American: Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was an American politician and lawyer. He was born on 12 February 1809 in Washington.

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States of America and was the main architect of the Unionists’ victory in the American War of Secession and the abolition of slavery. In the historical memory he is portrayed as a calm and thoughtful man, but perhaps everyone does not know that before becoming President of the United States he had frequent outbursts of anger, perhaps due to pills used by Lincoln to stop his depression.

Abraham Lincoln was a staunch anti-slavery man, although he did not entirely share the position of the abolitionists. In 1856, Abraham Lincoln joined the new republican party. In 1860 he was elected president of the United States of America.Between December 1860 and February 1861 the Southern states seceded from the Union, initiated by South Carolina, and formed their own Confederacy. In April 1861 the Southerners started the Civil War by attacking Fort Sumter, causing enormous loss of life and devastation.

In January 1863 Lincoln proclaimed the abolition of slavery only in the breakaway states. In April 1865 the South surrendered and the North won. Thus, Abraham Lincoln in the same year established the abolition of slavery throughout the American Union.Abraham Lincoln died on 14 April 1865.

His face together with other three relevant presidents of the Usa (Washington, Jefferson, Roosvelt) is carved in the rock on the famous Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.
